Malinky - Flower And Iron [CD]
Malinky - Flower And Iron [CD] One of Scotland's finest folksong quintets with a highly distinctive instrumental style. Fresh yet timeless arrangements of trad & contemporary material. Described by Scotland On Sunday as having "Magnificent vocal talent".
Malinky - Three Ravens [CD]
Malinky - Three Ravens [CD] The voices of Karine Polwart and Steve Byrne remain at the heart of the material, as do their sympathetic string accompaniments (both on bouzouki and guitar). Whistle and bohdrán player Mark Dunlop steps forward for the first time as a singer in his own right and Jon Bews adds his own swinging fiddle style and yet another singing voice. But the most exciting development sees the wonderful Irish box and whistle player Leo McCann join the group, renowned for his inventiveness and energy both as a soloist and accompanist. The new five-piece Malinky maintain an acoustic approach to traditional and original songs and tunes.
Malinky - The Unseen Hours [CD]
Malinky - The Unseen Hours [CD] An amazing album of superb music and traditional song, celebrating all the wondrous qualities of folk music…apart from scratchy bowing and dubious timing! Brilliant musicianship, excellent arrangements and vocals with real feeling set Malinky well above many other groups. A plethora of instruments and talent. Stupendous.
Malinky - Last Leaves [CD]
Malinky - Last Leaves [CD] Winners of the "Danny Kyle Award" at Celtic Connections 1999, this young band from Edinburgh is led by two fine voices and skilful instrumentation. The band are Karine Polwart (vocals, guitar, houzouki), Steven Byrne (vocals, guitar, cittern, mandolin, bouzouki), Mark Dunlop (bodhran, whistle) and Kit Patterson (fiddle, guitar). They have a repertoire of mainly Scottish song and this excellent debut album should showcase them to a wider audience.

Malinky

Few new bands of recent times have made such an impact as Malinky. From winning the inaugral "Danny Award" for their open-stage performance at the 1999 Celtic Connections festival, to the rave reviews garnered by their second album "3 Ravens" (CDTRAX233), this Scots/Irish five-piece band has emerged as one of the hottest properties on the international Celtic scene. The Band's song-centred reportoire combines a deep appreciation of tradition with a vibrant freshness of approach, taking in both classical ballads and outstanding and original songwriting, alongside sparkling instumental sets.

Malinky's current line-up features members Steve Byrne (cocals, bousouki, guitar) and Mark Dunlop (whistles, bodhran, vocals), together with later arrival Jon Bews (fiddle, vocals), and new members for 2005, rising star Fiona Hunter (vocals, cello), along with multi-instrumentalist Ewan MacPherson (mandolin, guitar, mandola, tenor banjo, vocals). With three of the five sharing lead vocal duties, and the entire group contributing backing vocals, the richness and breadth of their song palette is second to none, leaving listeners spoilt for choice between Fiona's cool lyrical clarity, Steve's Angus-scented resonance and Mark's soulful, Ulster-style delivery.

All five, too, are noted as sympathetic and imaginative accompanists, responding fluently to the intrinsic mood and shape of a song, while weaving in colours and rythms borrowed from a wide swathe of traditional and contempoary sources. Steve has also been hailed as one of Scotland's talented young songwriters, while Mark, Jon and Ewan contribute strong original tunes into the mix.
