Niel Gow Scottish Fiddle Ensemble

In December of 1997, Pete Clark assembled a quartet of musicians to record the music of Niel Gow and his contemporaries at Blair Castle in Perthshire. What makes this recording unique is that Pete played Niel Gow’s own fiddleniel gow ensemble which is kept on display at the castle. The resulting album, “Even Now”, was widely acclaimed on its release and continues to generate interest in and admiration for the musical legacy of Gow, his sons and his peers.

The Gow Scottish Fiddle Ensemble, augmented to include viola and upright bass, performed at the closing concert of Fiddle 2000, the annual Edinburgh fiddle fest. The programme included some of the works from the original recording, together with music by more recent fiddle icons, including James Scott Skinner, and culminated in a performance of an original composition by Pete Clark, “The Birnam Oak”, specially commissioned for Fiddle 2000.

The Niel Gow ensemble can provide anything from a duo through to a six piece ensemble and are available for functions world-wide. This would be a perfect group for a wedding or corporate function, adding a classical yet distinctly Scottish feel.

**Sound clips are available here.

What the papers said:

”… the ensemble brought Gow’s notes – and some of Scott Skinner’s too – off the page with a singing, full-bodied momentum.”     The Herald, 28/11/2000

“… like Albinoni with a Scots accent.”     The Evening News, 20/11/2000
