This new CD from
Pete Clark focuses on the music of Robert Mackintosh, the great fiddler/composer
from Tulliemet in Perthshire. Recorded in the music room at Murthly Castle, the
wonderful natural sound transports the listener back to 18th century Scotland
and the golden age of fiddle music. The music ranges from stately minuets and
gavottes to lively jigs and reels. Pete is joined by Heather Netz on fiddle,
Christine Hanson on cello and Jim Leighton on piano. This album follows on from
Pete's earlier recording, 'Even Now - The music of Niel Gow'. Well worth a
listen.
"Sycamore" (INVER224)
Pete Clark & The Niel Gow Ensemble
|

|
Not far from The Birnam Oak, which the fiddler Pete Clark
celebrated in his last CD, stands a massive sycamore. Pete and the Niel
Gow Ensemble play tribute to this wonderful tree in a short suite
celebrating the tree’s life. Pete composed this and all the other tracks
on the album; all distinctly Scottish, but some with a very Pachelbellian
roll. A delightful album. |

What the music press said :
"From airs to strathspeys, waltzes to jigs, there are over
two dozen tunes on Sycamore and many of them can hold up their heads alongside
traditional Scottish melodies." (The Living Tradition)
......"This is a CD which offers much
more than the common, foot-tapping, dance hall fiddling. Musical artistry
informs every note. - Sigurd Scott (Sounds Alive)
"they (The Niel Gow Ensemble) succeed
in marrying folk and chamber music in crisp and elegant fashion." (The
Scotsman)
"As well as an extremely able player,
clark is a skilled writer and arranger and marries traditional forms to chamber
music naturally with strong tunes, concise arrangements and an artist's eye. You
can just picture the River Braan jigging towards the Hermitage or, on the right
day, the Firth of Tay shimmering in the sunshine to Clark's soundtrack."
(The Glasgow Herald)
"The Birnam Oak" (INVER223)
Pete Clark & The Niel Gow Ensemble
|

|
Pete Clark is not only quite a nifty artist, and a superb
fiddler, but also, as this album attests, an excellent composer too. Pete
plays here with the Niel Gow Ensemble, presenting their own arrangements
of some old Scottish tunes, and some of Pete’s own pieces. The use of a
sterling ensemble endows these pieces with an orchestral quality rather
than a folky one, yet the music is still quintessentially Scottish. |

What the music press said :
"......Pete Clark is a highly talented musician and plays these tunes
with impeccable skill and taste. A great deal of trouble has been taken to produce the
authentic sound of Gow's time. These recordings were made in the ballroom of Blair Castle
with Pete playing Niel Gow's fiddle, "A roughly made Scottish instrument, not a great
work of art, as fiddles go" according to the sleeve, even so Pete Clark's skill
coaxes a lovely sound from it. .........I urge everyone with an appreciation of fiddle
music, whatever your tradition, to buy this CD. - Danny Saunders, Living Tradition
"........The most stirring piece is Niel Gow's Lament for the Death
of his Second Wife. The playing is so emotional that you feel Gow's pain at the loss of
his beloved wife. The album is a fitting tribute to one of Scotland's most influential
musicians. - U.S. SCOTS
".......He (Pete) is an outstanding musician and a highly talented
composer. In 21st century Scotland he deserves to become as well known as Niel Gow was in
the 18th. - Scots Heritage
(Australia)
".......Using a modern bow and gut strings, Clark produces a sweet
and mellow sound when playing tunes by Gow and his contemporaries. Second fiddler Martin
MacLeod, cellist Neil Johnstone and pianist Jim Leighton add attack to create an
attractive and important album of classical elegance and contemporary energy. - Inverness
Courier - Albums of the Year
"......A truly inspired recording. - Scottish Field
"......the album is an unmitigated delight. - Folk Roots
".......Highly recommended - TAPLAS (Wales)
"....Gow himself would have been delighted with the results. - Scottish
Memories
".....This is an excellent CD and I highly recommend it. - Fiddler
